According to philosopher John Searle, attention is inherently selective. When we search for something, attention narrows the field of possibilities, allowing one object to stand out while other elements recede into the background. In this sense, attention both reveals and conceals.
The same dynamic may be present in coaching conversations.
As coaches, we inevitably bring intentions, assumptions, theories, models, and frameworks into our work. These can help us make sense of what is unfolding, identify patterns, and guide our interventions. Yet they may also shape what we notice—and what we overlook.
What happens when our attention becomes organised around a particular framework, developmental model, or preferred way of understanding the client? What aspects of the client’s experience become illuminated, and what might disappear from view? How might our intentions influence the relationship, the conversation, and ultimately the outcomes of coaching?
This inquiry-led webinar invites coaches to explore the subtle interplay between intention, attention, and presence in coaching practice. we will examine how our inner stance shapes perception, influences the coaching relationship, and affects our capacity to remain open to what is emerging moment by moment.
