I’m the founder of Real Teams Coaching, which is a leadership coaching and training company.
We specialise in developing the people and team leadership capabilities of leaders from technical, scientific or analytical professions .
Recent clients have been doctors from Great Ormond Street Hospital, senior leaders from a regional ambulance service, and chartered surveyors.
Technical expert leaders know the intricacies of their subject and have a clear vision and strategy for their organisation.
But dealing with people is often a different challenge. And one that can be tricky to navigate - even after traditional leadership development training.
Common problems are working out how to get a team of talented individuals to work together better? How to get rid of siloed thinking, conflicting agendas and poor collaboration? How to resolve the tricky team dynamics and unhealthy patterns of behaviour that can become entrenched? Sometimes it feels overwhelming and impossible.
Leaders know what needs to change. But not how to change it. I understand that the people side of leadership can feel like a dark art!
Leading a highly effective team requires a focus both on the leader’s own skills and in designing and facilitating their team as a whole system.
The vast research base and developments in thinking on team effectiveness, team dynamics and emotional intelligence shows that people leadership is a combination of science and art.
Using insights from neuroscience and a tailored blend of data-driven individual and team coaching, I help my clients:
• develop their skills, behaviours and competencies in emotional intelligence, and
• observe and influence team dynamics to get their team to better connect, communicate and collaborate which will have a dramatic effect on organisational outcomes.
As a life-long learner, I’m an accredited executive coach, well versed and certified in a range of coaching approaches and data-driven diagnostics including the Team Diagnostic Survey and the Genos Emotional Intelligence assessments.
This data-driven, scientific approach combined with my support and challenge as a coach, often appeals to technical expert professionals. They rapidly create a detailed understanding of their existing situation and identify ways forward to become confident and self-reliant as people leaders.
After an early career as an economist in government and academia, I then worked for 20 years as management consultant where I designed and lead change for large corporate clients in the energy, government and national security sectors and the NHS. I became a coach full-time in 2015.
